Selections and their Applications
Valentin Gutev (UKZN)
Abstract
The concept of a selection was introduced into point-set topology 65 years ago by one of the most influential researchers in general topology in the last decades-Ernest Michael. While it may not have been predicted when Michael introduced this idea that it would have useful applications outside the field of topology, it has now been demonstrated that selections have many applications to fields outside of topology. The present talk will demonstrate such applications in Functional Analysis (The Bartle-Graves Theorem) and Topology (The Hanai's Theorem), also applications of usco selections in Continuum Theory and applications of l.s.c. selections in the Theory of Trivial Bundles of Spaces of Probability Measures.
