A talk by Prof Jim McKenzie, UKZN, Westville Campus

Theoretical Physics Seminar

SPEAKER: Prof Jim McKenzie, UKZN, Westville Campus

TITLE: MHD Waves in the Solar Atmosphere and the Earth’s Magnetosphere. Klein – Gordon, Dirac Equations.

ABSTRACT

We develop the classical fluid equations for waves in a stratified atmosphere. (e.g. solar corona) and a dipole magnetic field (e.g. magnetosphere) and show that they can transformed into either are  one – dimensional Dirac equations or Klein- Gordon equations.

We discuss the eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions.

Date: 13 March 2008, Friday

Time: 11h30-12h30

Venue: Seminar Room, 3rd Floor, H Block, Westville Campus, UKZN

Tea and biscuits will be served at 11h00

Hosted by

The National Institute of Theoretical Physics - KZN

The Astrophysics and Cosmology Research Unit,

The Quantum Research Group and School of Physics
