The School of Mathematical Sciences
Overview
Members of staff teach undergraduate and Honours courses in Pure and
Applied Mathematics, and supervise students in our MSc and PhD
programs. In addition, the School offers courses in remedial
mathematics and runs numerous service courses for other departments.
Members of the School have access to a wide range of journals and
related services
like MathSciNet.
Staff and students in the School conduct research in a number of areas
of Pure and Applied Mathematics, including Algebra, Analysis,
Combinatorics, Cosmology and General Relativity, Differential
Equations, Financial Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Mathematical Modelling, and Topology.
Eight of our fourteen NRF-rated researchers have earned a B
(Internationally Acclaimed) rating. We are one of the most active
research units in the university. Three of the sixteen recipients of
the university-wide Vice-Chancellor's Research Award have been members
of the School. In 2003, staff in the School published 32 SAPSE-unit articles in international journals. Several members of
the School sit on the editorial boards of international journals. The
School has hosted a number of international conferences.
