To provide the student with essential tools of advanced applied mathematics.

Fourier series, application to boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations (Sturm-Liouville problem). Series solution of ordinary differential equations, basic special functions. Separation of variables for one and two dimensional PDE's. Fourier transform, applications to PDE's. Further complex variable theory, Laurent’s and Taylor’s theorem, isolated singularities and residues, evaluation of integrals by residues. Applications.


Class tests and/or assignments (20%), 2h exam (80%).

30% Class mark, 80% attendance at lectures & tutorials.

in Semester 1. Offered to students in the Faculty of Engineering.
